We use test panels from animal owners at home and at animal shelters, so that the animals are in their daily living conditions. This allows us to test the palatability, digestibility, etc. of our feeds.

By complying the guidelines for animal food and often even being above these guidelines, we can guarantee that our feeds are complete. Because of this we do not have to use laboratory animals or any other test materials.

Yes, there are SANIMED samples. Please ask our samples at your nearest SANIMED vet.

The feeding schedules are guidelines that are basically sufficient for an average dog or cat.

Every animal has different needs and a different level of activity. Therefore, keep an eye on the weight of your dog or cat and adjust the feed.

It could be the case that the color and size of a kibble slightly differ per production run / package.

The SANIMED kibbles are extruded kibbles. This means that the kibbles assume their shape and color under the influence of high pressure and temperature during production.

In addition, we use natural raw materials that also determine the appearance of the kibble. Ofcourse this does not affect the quality of the product.

Our feeds are made with natural raw materials for your dog and / or cat. Our products are made without artificial flavour enhancers or colourants.

We therefore use the natural preservative tocopherol. However, this is indicated as an E number (E309) which sometimes causes confusion. But don't worry, our products are 100% natural.

To give the right amount of food to your dog, you can use a SANIMED measuring cup. A measuring cup is available at your veterinary practice.

With a kitchen scale you can determine the amount more accurately. This indicates exactly how many grams you will feed your dog. The feeding schedule forms a guideline for the recommend quantity. But every animal has different needs and a different level of activity, so please keep an eye on the weight of your dog and adjust the feed if necessary.

Food stays fresh for the longest time in a dry, cool and dark space, so that the environment does not affect the freshness of the feed.

You can also keep the feed fresh for by using a separate storage box for a few days. In this way you only have to open the bag once a week and you prevent new oxygen coming into contact with the kibbles, which can lead to spoilage.

If you use a storage box it is important that you clean it before refilling.

One of the main reasons a dog does not want to eat is that dogs want to see how far they can go. The dog is looking for your limits in this case. That is why it is important that you will not give up too quickly, because if you give in to the wishes of your dog, it can get spoiled.

Tips for stimulating your dog's appetite:

  • Feed your dog at fixed times, this is better than unlimited feeding. And do this after you and your family have eaten.
  • A dog must be able to eat in a quiet place. Put the food in a quiet place and leave the dog alone during dinner.

  • Leave snacks out because they are very tasty. This allows the dog to prefer snacks and refuse normal food.

Tips to stimulate nutrition intake:

  • Add warm water or bouillon to the kibbles. Mix it together and wait a few minutes before giving the food to your dog;

  • You can heat the kibbles  in the microwave for a few seconds. Due to the heat, more smell from the kibbles will be released (advice; put it together with a bowl of water in the microwave)
  • If your dog does not want to eat, remove the food bowl after 20 minutes and offer the food again in for about 3 hours.

Giving food to the dog with a lot of variety is anthropomorphic (according to the example of us humans).

But, the gut flora of the dog is much more specialized and less numerous than that of humans. This intestinal flora is used to processing a certain diet. If it is changed quite abruptly, this can lead to disruption of the intestinal flora. As a result, it may happen that the new food is not completely digested and absorbed in the beginning. An abrupt transition of food can even lead to diarrhea.

That is why we advise to mix the new food in increasing quantity with the old food during a transition period to a different diet. So the dog can get used to the new food.

How many times you should feed your cat varies and is age-related.

A kitten of 8 weeks, for example, receives at least 3 times a day a small amount of kibbles, whether or not soaked in a little hot water.

An average adult cat (> 1 year) has enough of two meals a day usually, for example in the morning and in the evening. The unrestricted availability of food often leads to obesity for indoor and neutered cats.

Cats aren’t omnivores. They are picky animals that place high demands on their food. The taste is not the most important factor in determining whether the cat likes to eat a diet. Your cat assesses the attractiveness of her diet very accurately, based on the following points:

  • Smell of cat food
  • Shape of the kibble
  • Structure of the kibble
  • Size of the kibble

A cat 'approves' a food when the overall experience is positive. For which diet your cat chooses depends on the individual preference. Most of the times cats will try what they like the most.

antischrokbakDepending on the size of your dog, it often helps with large dogs to put the food bowl slightly higher in a bowl holder i.e..

To further reduce the gobble, you can place something (for example an inverted dish or large rounded stone) in the food bowl (note that the dog can not hurt itself). There are also special 'slow feeder'-bowls available.

Coprophagy, or eating faeces, can have multiple causes. It is very difficult to find out what causes this unpleasant property. It can be:

  • Boredom;
  • Draw attention;
  • Reconnaissance;
  • Tasty stools;
  • Poor hygiene;
  • Learned custom;
  • Excluded from the mother who often eats puppies during littering and suckling to keep the litter hygienically clean.

So there can be many causes. A shortage of nutrients is almost never the cause. Provided your dog naturally gets a complete dog food and, medically, has no abnormalities in the gastrointestinal tract.

Good dog food and cat food contains all necessary nutrients in the right balance. SANIMED ensures that your dog or cat stays healthy and has optimal digestion. The following five nutrients are essential:

  • Proteins;
  • Fats;
  • Carbohydrates;
  • Vitamins;
  • Minerals.

Proteins are important building blocks for, for example, the muscles, organs, skin and coat, bones, nails and other tissues.

Why are proteins so important for your dog and cat:

The different antibodies, which are necessary for the immune system of the dog and / or cat, consist of proteins;

  • Proteins play an important role in metabolism as an enzyme or hormone;
  • Proteins are a source of energy and contribute to a tasty taste of the diet.
  • Proteins are made up of different units, the amino acids. Dogs and / or cats can make a number of these amino acids themselves. However, certain essential amino acids can not be produced and therefore have to be taken out of the diet. Proteins that are easily digested and that contain all essential amino acids in the right quantities are considered as high-quality proteins.

A protein deficiency can manifest itself in poor appetite, slowed growth, dull coat or reduced resistance to infection. On the other hand, excess protein can be harmful to older dogs and / or cats.

Fats are the main and best-digestible energy source.

Fats:

  • Deliver twice as much energy as carbohydrates and proteins;
  • His supplier of essential fatty acids; inter alia important for a good skin and coat condition (for example Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids);
  • Ensure the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) by the body;
  • Contribute to the palatability and structure of the diet.

A deficiency of essential fatty acids can manifest itself in skin and coat disorders and reproductive problems. Excess fat is stored in the body and can cause the dog and / or cat to become too fat.

Carbohydrates are an important energy source for the body of the dog and cat.

Dog and cat food contains digestible carbohydrates and non-digestible carbohydrates. Digestible carbohydrates are starches and sugars that the body can absorb and use as a source of energy.

Non-digestible carbohydrates are dietary fiber. Dietary fibers are necessary for proper bowel function.

Vitamins are organic substances that must be present in the diet - albeit in small quantities. This is necessary for maintaining the normal metabolism of the dog and / or cat. A number of vitamins can not or not sufficiently be produced by your pet. In case of a deficiency or a lack of vitamins, all sorts of symptoms can occur.

We can subdivide the vitamins into:
  • Water-soluble vitamins
  • Fat-soluble vitamins
Fat-soluble vitamins are, for example, vitamins A, D, E and K. Vitamin B and C are examples of water-soluble vitamins.

Minerals mainly occur in food as food salts. The body needs a certain amount of minerals every day. Minerals occur only in small amounts in the body of the dog and / or cat. Because minerals are essential for the metabolic processes, they must be sufficiently present in the diet.

Minerals have different functions in the body. These substances are important for, for example, metabolic reactions, skeletal building, nerve impulses, muscle contractions, transport of proteins, hormones, and the maintenance of water and salts.

Fish oil provides a shiny coat, healthy skin, supple joints and a stronger immune system. Fish oil also has a very beneficial effect on the condition of heart and veins. It is very rich in omega-3 and -6 fatty acids.

Essential amino acids are amino acids that are not made from other amino acids and therefore have to be delivered via the power supply. That is why they must be present in the feed.

The body of your animal consists for a large part of moisture. A loss of 15% body fluid can be fatal. A healthy dog or cat normally needs about 50 ml / kg of body weight per day of water.

A dog loses moisture all day long. Not only through the urine and faeces but also through sweating through the soles of the feet and by panting.

It can not be said often enough, but make sure that fresh water is always ready! Dogs depend on us for the water supply. If a dog has not been able to drink for more than 48 hours, he can suffer irreparable damage. So clean drinking water every day is really a requirement.

Proteins are made up of different amino acids. Certain amino acids can not be created by a cat itself. These amino acids are called essential amino acids. Taurine is one of these. That is why it is important that the cat receives this via food. A chronic shortage of taurine in cats can cause problems in the retina, resulting in blindness or even the basis of heart disease. Animal proteins are a source of taurine.

The moment a puppy is taken home, it will be a big change for your new best friend.

The puppy is taken away from his mother and littermates, comes in a new environment and will be often get in and out a car. All these new impressions can cause stress and stress can influence digestion. That is why it is important that your puppy gets the same diet the first few days.

After a few days you can switch to a different diet. Always switch gradually by mixing a number of days,

mopshondSANIMED Puppy is advised to:

Everyone wants to reward his or her dog. This is also very important to build a good relationship with your dog. Many dogs are sensitive to receive a reward. Rewarding can be done in many ways: namely by speaking to your dog in a friendly way or by having an extra hug.

But it is of course an even bigger reward if you can give your dog something tasty. Most snacks are only rich in fats, salts and other nutrients that can make your dog too fat. That is why we advise you to reward your dog with its own kibbles. You can deduct this from his meal. In this way you always know exactly what your dog receives from nutrients. In addition to the SANIMED Skin/Sensitive product, we also have perfectly matching Functional Treats. These snacks have the same composition and effect as the dry food and are therefore the perfect reward!

If you give SANIMED Hypoallergenic DR, SANIMED Hypoallergenic LR, SANIMED Skin / Sensitive, SANIMED Weight Reduction dry food, you can also reward your dog with a slice of wet food of the same productname. SANIMED has also a sausage for these foods that is completely interchangeable and can also be combined with the diet food.

Variety of food is called anthropomorphic with a nice word. This means that a human starts from his own habits. We find it boring to eat the same thing every day: so a dog as well. But nothing is less true because for a dog it is important to eat the same thing every day.

His gastrointestinal adjusts to a certain diet. With an abrupt feed transition there is even a risk of diarrhea. That is why we advise you to mix the new food in increasing quantity with the old food for a few days at a feed transition.

Do you want to give your dog something else every now and then and do you feed SANIMED Hypoallergenic DR, SANIMED Hypoallergenic LR, SANIMED Skin / Sensitive, SANIMED Weight Reduction? Then you can reward your dog with a slice of the wet food of the same name. For these products SANIMED has that are completely interchangeable and can also be combined with the diet food.

The SANIMED dry food contains only top-quality, natural ingredients. The foods contain all the nutrients that a dog needs.

Feeding with a different (wet) feed is not necessary and even not recommended to ensure the balance in the food as optimal as possible. You can give your dog SANIMED sausage from the same diet, because this sausage has the same nutrients as the dry food and are fully interchangeable.

Give your dog also access to fresh water.

If dogs eat leftovers, they have the risk they do not get enough essential nutrients. A dog should get nutrients such as proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals in the right amount and ratio.

Leftovers often contain an excess of certain nutrients, such as fats and salts. In addition, our meal can be too spicy for the dog. Dogs can suffer from disturbed digestion, which can be expressed in flatulence or diarrhea.

A bitch is pregnant for about 63 days. From the 5th to 6th week of pregnancy, the nutritional needs of the bitch will increase. 25% of the fetus develops during the first 6 weeks of gestation. In week 6 to 9, the fetus develops for the remaining 75%. During the last third of the pregnancy there is an increased nutritional need.

The increased nutritional need is best solved by giving your dog a specially formulated diet from the 5th - 6th week. SANIMED Puppy is very suitable for load-bearing and lactating bitches.

Hond met nest

After the birth of the pups the period of suckling begins. This lactation period requires a lot from your bitch. She needs a lot of extra food to keep milk production up to standard.

It is best to choose a concentrated feed. This diet contains a lot of easily absorbable energy in the form of fats, which is necessary for the growth of the pups and an increased amount of vitamins and minerals. You can supplement this with the SANIEMD Recovery sausage or SANIMED Puppy dry food. SANIMED Recovery is a very tasty sausage with a high energy value, suitable for dogs that need extra energy to maintain their optimal weight.

Cats and dogs both have unique nutritional needs, and therefore they need food that has been specially developed for them. Health problems can arise if your dog does not get the right nutrition.

When the kitten is taken home, you will understand this is already a big change for the kitten.

The kitten is taken away from his mother and littermates, comes in a new environment and is often also taken in the car. All these new impressions can cause stress and stress can influence digestion. That is why it is important for your kitten to receive the same diet the first few days.

After a few days you can switch to a different diet. Always switch over gradually by mixing a few days.

Kittens up to 12 weeks can digest milk from the mother. This milk contains much less lactose than cow milk.

Moreover, most cats lose the ability to digest the lactose in the milk after twelve weeks. If cats suffer from lactose intolerance this occurs in diarrhea or flatulence.

Adult cats do not need milk as a nutrient, therefore it should not be given.

If you give SANIMED Anti-Struvite, SANIMED Renal, SANIMED Skin / Sensitive or SANIMED Weight Reduction, you can also reward your dog with a slice of wet food (pouch) of the same product name. This wet food is completely interchangeable and can also be combined with the diet food.

The pregnancy takes an average of 9 weeks and in that period the cat needs more food than usual. Unlike other mammals, the body weight of a pregnant cat increases immediately from the first day after the cover.

That means that from that moment on she needs more food. Pregnant and nursing cats can be given SANIMED Kitten from the beginning of the pregnancy.

A mother cat has a greater nutritional need to ensure sufficient milk for her kittens. The nutritional need of your mother cat is greatest when the kittens are 2 to 3 weeks old because the milk yield is the greatest.

It is best to feed your mother cat small portions throughout the day. SANIMED Kitten is very suitable for this. You can continue feeding your cat after weaning until your cat has reached the optimum weight again.

Cats and dogs have unique nutritional needs, and therefore they need food that has been specially developed for them. Health problems can arise if your cat does not get the right nutrition.

Always switch evenly from one feed to another. This prevents digestive problems.

Advice:

  • soak the kibbles in lukewarm water;
  • feed your dog preferably in 4 portions during the changeover period of at least 8-10 days;
  • mix the soaked kibbles with the fresh meat during the changeover period, so that the dog gets used to dry food;
  • feed 1/4 soaked kibbles and 3/4 fresh meat for the first 2-3 days;
  • then 2-3 days 1/2 of soaked kibbles and 1/2 fresh meat;
  • then 2-3 days 3/4 of soaked kibbles and 1/4 fresh meat;
  • after this you can switch completely to the new feed.

When switching from fresh meat to kibbles, your dog may have some more stool. As soon as your dog is accustomed to kibbles, this will become less and will recover.

Reddish coloration of the blond / white coat can be caused by licking, moisture, medication and / or cosmetics (e.g. shampoo). Usually it is a local discoloration of a white coat to red (rust brown) by chronic licking of the toes. The reason for this can be environmental allergy (atopy). A similar effect occurs in animals with a tear stripe. Nutrition plays no part for this reddish discoloration here.

SANIMED Skin/Sensitive can help to reduce the atopy symptoms.

A black / dark-haired dog can get a red glow over his hair due to a shortage of copper or a shortage of the amino acid tyrosine. Copper is a nutrient that provides the color intensity of the coat (the pigment) of a dog. A diet rich in copper and / or tyrosine promotes the black intensity of the hair. In addition, the red coloring may also have other causes, namely if your dog suffers from a moulting period, while using medication or cosmetics (e.g. shampoo) and sun bleaching. SANIMED products contain sufficient copper and tyrosine for optimal color intensity of the coat.

The skin and coat undergo varying influences throughout the year. Varying humidity, temperatures and moulting periods can give the skin and coat not always in optimal condition. If this problem persists, consult your veterinarian.
